Myspace Secret Shows- Details: Metro Station and Hey Monday – 01/20/09 San Diego, CA

29 01 2009

It was a day that America won’t soon forget. Earlier in the morning, Barack Obama had been sworn in as the forty-fourth President of the United States, resulting in an undeniable sense of patriotism sweeping across the country. Everywhere you turned, American citizens were talking about the change of guard that was occurring in Washington: They were discussing where they were when Obama gave his address and how it moved them.

So, with that in mind, you would expect that the parking lot at this Secret Show on Inauguration Day would have been filled with fans decked out in red, white and blue. Ehhh, not exactly. Turns out, both fans of Metro Station and Hey Monday are united by the colors yellow, purple and neon green, as proven by the near 500 diehards who camped outside of Soma to see them play at the club’s intimate side stage.

At times, the overzealous crowd looked a bit like a bag of Skittles, waiting in line and getting to know our latest sponsor, TurboTax Federal Free Edition. But soon they filed inside to initially watch Hey Monday tear through a handful of songs off their excellent debut, Hold On Tight. Kicking things off with their current hit “Homecoming,” pint-sized singer Casadee Pope began strutting across the stage, sweeping her bangs from her eyes as she went. Though the band played only a brief set, they hit a high note — literally — when Pope strapped on her acoustic guitar for a somber version of “Candle.

A few moments later, Pope and her bandmates exited the stage and from there practically every girl in the audience rushed to the front. The young ladies were pushing forward, of course, to get a closer look at the

boys of Metro Station, who are coming off a whirlwind year of touring behind 2007’s Metro Station, including a stint this past winter in Europe.

“Man,” lead vocalist Mason Musso said, looking out at the crowd, “it’s good to be back in California.”

“You look sexy San Diego,” the band’s other singer Trace Cyrus said just before they launched into their infectious new single, “Seventeen Forever.” “The most beautiful girls in the world live in California.”

That pretty much set the mood for the next hour’s worth of song, all of which were pulled from their self titled debut. That included a rousing version of their biggest hit, “Shake It,” which lead to a full on dance party up front and at least a handful of couples making out in the back of the club.

As the night came to an end, the band gave the crowd one last song to dance to, before vowing to see them in a few months on the “Believers Never Die” tour with Fall Out Boy. It was a real treat to have Metro Station and Hey Monday play an intimate show like this, especially since they are going to spend the Spring rocking arenas. So a big thanks goes out to them, Decaydance, Columbia, Soma and especially Turbo Tax for making shows like this free for all of you!

This was our first Secret Show of the new year, but make sure to keep checking your bulletins because we are just getting started.

We’ll see you at the next show!
